Welcome to Earth Mesh!
A project to create a worldwide mesh (cloud) network to share internet connectivity, data and computing power.
The primary goal is to improve the internet, by making it more:
*Decentralized
*Resilient
*Secure
How will it work?
1. Users will buy a small device (Node) that would just need to be plugged into the power outlet (ideally would also be connected to the internet via ethernet/wifi)
2. The Node will then establish a connection to nearby nodes (if any are found)
3. If the Node does have its own internet connection, it will try to get it from nearby Nodes
3. The Node will then:
*(If internet is present) Act as a WiFi hotstop
*Receive and send files to the mesh/cloud (websites hosted on the mesh, files, etc)
*Participate in distributed computing projects (like Folding@home, SETI@home, etc)
*The Node will be controlled by users primarily via a smartphone App or Web-based interface
Technology - Hardware
*Hardware Architecture: for greater compatibility we would ideally use something x86-based, but that will probably not be worth it due to the cost, so ARM seems more realistic
*We can use something like a Raspberry Pi, ODROID (ODROID-MC1) or hardware used for the FreedomBox like the DreamPlug
Technology - Software
*For the OS, we can use something like OpenWrt or a general purpose Linux Distro like Debian
*For the Node storage, we can use microSD cards, ideally replaceable/upgradeable by the end-user
*The wireless meshing should be based on open/public standards, for example 802.11s
*For payments, Bitcoin will be very useful due to its automated nature and global reach
*For storage, we should look into Storj
*For the distributed-computing platform, we should look into Ethereum
*For the file-sharing functionality, we should look into the BitTorrent or ed2k protocols
